playing is good

The study carried out, entitled “Portugal a Brincar II 2022”, was based on the reality of 1600 families with children up to 10 years old and was carried out by the Escola Superior de Educação de Coimbra in partnership with the Instituto de Apoio a Crianças and Stars & Hedgehogs magazine.

The study found that for 17.3% of the groups, play is important because it promotes the child’s affective and emotional development, while around 11.6% emphasize the development of cognitive abilities, while 9.7% think that it’s just a fun time.

When families were asked about the average time they spend playing with their children, 27.4% of respondents said they plan two to three hours a day. The researchers think this is a very short average time for young children, as they tend to have more energy during the day at this stage.

The survey data also showed that parents are increasingly concerned about connecting their children more closely with nature and the outside elements, as many children have recently chosen to stay at home or watch TV with their smartphones.

Pandemic and Covid19

The second part of the questions focused on the pandemic and Covid19. For 67.5% of families, the pandemic situation had a negative impact on children’s playtime. They noted that the little ones were less willing to do some activities because there were no partners to play with, but 78.8% of those responsible answered that they had more time to play with their children because of the confinement.

The researchers, after analyzing the data and through other research and studies, concluded that “Play is one of the most important and structuring dimensions in a child’s development, which makes perfect sense that we should address this topic.” This defended Madalena Nunes Diogo, General Manager of Estrelas & Ouriços.

The director also mentioned that more studies are needed and that we need to be more careful, especially in childhood, when children develop better social and cognitive skills.
