Four people died and many more were injured in a fire on Thursday evening at a hospital in Uelzen, south of the German city of Hamburg (Lower Saxony), local police said on Friday.
According to the police, there are more than ten injured, several of them seriously. The causes of the disaster are unknown.
The fire broke out at around 10:45 p.m. local time (21:45 GMT) and when emergency responders arrived, flames could be seen on the third floor as well as “a lot of smoke,” according to a news release. According to the same source, “cries for help” could be heard from the building.
Firefighters and police conducted evacuations and took measures to prevent the fire from spreading. As of Friday afternoon, the cause of the fire had not yet been clarified and the authorities were examining all clues as part of the investigation.
According to initial estimates, the property damage could amount to more than one million euros, the police reported.
