Four days after the fire that raged at an apartment building in Old Montreal, the owner’s lawyer says there is no reason to doubt the building’s compliance.

“I think the building was up to standard, it was a building that was insured. There is no reason to doubt the conformity of the building (…) There is indeed one apartment that perhaps did not have a window in the traditional sense,” says Me. Alexandre Bergevin, lawyer for the building’s owner.
He stated that smoke detectors did exist, but did not confirm whether or not they worked.
“There were smoke detectors in most, if not most, of the apartments, but it is each tenant’s responsibility [de vérifier s’ils étaient fonctionnels]’ he emphasizes.
The families of those missing in the fire that devastated a building in Old Montreal want answers from authorities.
“So imagine if they didn’t have any exits for them (…) How come the authorities neglected a neighborhood like Old Montreal and couldn’t take better care of its buildings,” explains Charlie Lacroix’s grandfather.
