Firefighter injured while investigating underground power problem at Dunkin’ in Camden, New Jersey – WPVI-TV

CAMDEN, New Jersey (WPVI) — A Camden County firefighter was injured Sunday while investigating an incident involving an underground power problem at a Dunkin’.

Officials in Camden said a firefighter suffered non-life-threatening injuries when he came into contact with an electrical box at a Dunkin’ building on the block of South Broadway Street.

The firefighter was taken to Cooper University Hospital for his injuries.

Around noon, smoke was seen coming from a manhole near the Dunkin’.

Officials say a fire started from the manhole cover of an underground electrical facility beneath the cafe.

According to officials, the underground line was energized and caused a power surge. This caused an electrical panel in the Dunkin’ to explode.

“There was a small explosion inside that injured the firefighter,” commented Jesse Flax, assistant chief of the Camden Fire Department.

The faceplate was torn off this panel and struck the firefighter.

He is expected to be OK, officials say.

“At the moment he is undergoing hospital treatment and his condition is, as far as I can tell, stable,” Flax said.

No further information has been released regarding this incident.

PSE&G is supporting the investigation.

New Jersey Transit’s light rail service was impacted by the underground fire. Buses transported people to the crime scene.
