Former US President Donald Trump is due to appear in court after being charged in the government documents case. The indictment will be read at the hearing on Tuesday (21:00 CEST) before a federal court in Miami. Trump is accused of 35 crimes. It is the first time that a federal indictment has been filed against a former US president.
Trump had described the allegations as “ridiculous” in the past. The 76-year-old will likely plead not guilty. Security precautions have been tightened around the US state metropolis court due to the expected protests.
In the 49-page indictment, released on Friday, Trump is charged with seven misdemeanor categories. This includes conspiracy to obstruct investigations and unlawfully withholding highly confidential information. Trump wants to run again in the 2024 election and leads the field of Republican candidates in the polls.
