First Call: Joe Schobert already released; mixed injury news for Ravens; Tyler Glasnow is attempting a comeback

In Wednesday’s “First Call,” a former Pittsburgh Steeler struggles to keep a new job. The Baltimore Ravens are getting mixed results on the injury front. Tyler Glasnow is trying to come back.

And Duquesne’s football team has new captains.

That was fast

Joe Schobert didn’t last long in Denver.

Former Steelers linebacker was only a bronco for eight days. He was signed in Colorado on August 15 and released on Tuesday.

Schobert had 112 tackles in 2021, his only season in Pittsburgh. But he wasn’t nearly the kind of Impact player the Steelers thought they were going to get when they acquired him in a trade with Jacksonville last August.

Schobert is only 28, but he’s now five years away from his 2017 Pro Bowl season with the Cleveland Browns and has been on four teams in four years.

saw this coming

After a tough performance against the Steelers on Saturday night, the Jacksonville Jaguars released the only kicker on their roster.

That was Ryan Santoso. He was let loose after making three of six field goal attempts in the preseason, inclusive two misses from over 50 yards against the Steelers on Saturday.

Jacksonville called on James McCourt to fill the void in the position. He was cut by the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday.

“Consistency is what you look for in kickers. It will be a good opportunity for him and then for us to continue the process,” Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson said of McCourt via CBS Sports. “We still have a bit of time here before kicks mean anything, but it will be a good opportunity for him.”

Back with Baltimore

Baltimore Ravens center Tyler Linderbaum is back training with the team. This is after returning from a foot injury on August 4th.

This is according to the team’s website. Linderbaum is expected to start as a rookie after the Ravens traded to select him with the 25th overall. Many Steelers fans thought he was a candidate for the Steelers at pick #20, but quarterback Kenny Pickett was still on the board.

The former Iowa Hawkeye did lone work on Friday while the Ravens were in Arizona, but BaltimoreRavens.com claims he increased his activity on Tuesday.

All-Pro left tackle Ronnie Stanley (ankle) and outside linebacker Tyus Bowser (Achilles) were still sidelined Tuesday. Head coach John Harbaugh aims to practice two to three weeks before games.

The Ravens open the regular season against the New York Jets in 19 days.

comeback kid

Former Pirates pitcher Tyler Glasnow is attempting his comeback.

The Tampa Bay Rays ace underwent surgery by Tommy John on August 4, 2021. The right-hander made his last appearance on June 14, 2021 against the Chicago White Sox.

According to the Associated Press, Glasnow hit 97 mph while completing his second live batting practice Tuesday.

He did not rule out a return this season.

“It’s easy to be very optimistic,” Glasnow said. “I felt really good. My bike was good, (the) execution was good. But if I’m not comfortable and I don’t feel 100% ready and ready, then I’m not. I won’t force it.”

Glasnow threw 21 pitches against two minor leagues before the Rays played the Los Angeles Angels. The regular season ends on October 5th.

named captains

The Duquesne football team has named their captains for the 2022 season.

On the offensive side, it’s quarterback Joe Mischler and offensive lineman Michael Dorundo. Mischler, a transfer from Ohio University, is in grad school but is still listed as a junior. He blew out his knee in the opener of the fall 2021 season at Texas Christian last year but is believed to be ready to play this season.

Dorundo, a native of Gibsonia, is a sophomore but has been with the Dukes since 2019.

Defensive captain duties are split between defenseman Jeremiah Josephs and linebacker Anthony Dellovade. Josephs — a Gateway High School graduate and transfer from Miami, Ohio — was a second-team All-NEC last year.

Dellovade is a West Allegheny grad starting his fifth year on the Bluff.
