First EU country to completely dispense with Russian gas – economy

After Parliament demanded a government energy embargo, Lithuania became the first EU country to completely dispense with Russian gas.

According to the Nextra news channel, Lithuania will completely dispense with Russian gas in the future. This is the first EU country to decide to reject Russian gas.

In a resolution passed unanimously last week, the Seimas Assembly called on the Vilnius government to come up with solutions to stop the import and consumption of Russian oil and natural gas as quickly as possible.

“Consistent and punctual”

“We are the first European Union country among Gazprom’s supplier countries that is independent of Russian gas supplies. This is the result of a consistent, long-term energy policy and timely infrastructure decisions,” said the Energy Minister of Lithuania, Dainius Kreivis. Now, the expansion of renewable energies and the local self-generation of electricity must be promoted.

According to parliament, the Baltic state has received oil, gas and electricity from Russia worth more than three billion euros every year. Lithuania borders the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad and Belarus, an ally of Russia.
