Pete Carroll and John Schneider may have struck gold in consecutive drafts. Last year’s strong performance, led by 1,000-yard rusher Kenneth Walker III and Pro Bowler Tariq Woolen, helped Seattle to a surprising playoff appearance. And the impressive collection of talent this past April could further make the team a real contender.
First-round WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba and second-round RB Zach Charbonnet are primed for key roles on offense. JSN perfectly complements DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett as a productive slot receiver with electric catch-and-run ability. He will terrorize opponents with his excellent route running skills, as Geno Smith is quickly making the Ohio State product one of his favorite targets in critical moments. Meanwhile, as a downhill runner with explosive strength and power, Charbonnet is a perfect buddy for Walker. The two young defenders deliver a deadly one-two punch to Seattle, allowing Carroll to impose his will on his opponents on the ground.
No. 5 overall pick Devon Witherspoon and second-rounder Derick Hall add even more excitement to a defense trying to return to its 2010s style of play. A versatile lockdown corner with excellent instincts and coverage skills, Witherspoon could eventually thrive on the island opposite Woolen, although the Illinois player is currently dealing with a sore hamstring and could miss Week 1. Hall may also need some seasoning before jumping into the rotation, but his athleticism and explosiveness add another tool to defensive coordinator Clint Hurtt’s toolbox.
