AFRICA – The number of victims is staggering, making these floods one of the worst humanitarian disasters in recent years. The United Nations, citing the Libyan Red Crescent, announced on the night of Saturday to Sunday, September 17, that at least 11,300 people died and 10,000 were still missing in Derna, eastern Libya.
“These numbers are expected to rise as search and rescue teams operate around the clock,” warned OCHA, the UN agency responsible for humanitarian affairs.
It was Storm Daniel that hit the country on Monday and caused the tragedy. This led to the failure of two dams above this city of 100,000; It is as if a tsunami had been released along the wadi that crosses Derna, sweeping away everything in its path.
The rescue work is very complicated in this region, which has been in political chaos since the end of Maoummar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011. The chances of finding survivors are now slim.
On the relief front, the French-based military hospital is expected to be operational this Sunday after a third plane was able to land overnight.
