One person was found dead in a vehicle in Gosier and a second, also in a car, in the Grand Camp sector, she said.

The exceptionally intense rains that affected Les Abymes, Le Gosier and Pointe-à-Pitre began this Saturday around 1am (7am in mainland France). “Rainfall has exceeded 300mm, a phenomenon larger than that recorded during Cyclone Maria in 2017,” the prefecture said.

The island had been placed on red alert by Météo France for the night due to heavy rain and thunderstorms, before moving to orange alert and then yellow alert this Saturday.
