Floods in Thailand: five dead, more rain expected

Five people have died in floods in northern Thailand, where authorities are predicting more severe weather on Tuesday, in the middle of the monsoon season.

A flash flood killed five people on Sunday in Phayao province on the border with Laos, the health ministry said.

According to this source, around 23 people have died and 33 others have been injured in floods across the country since the beginning of September.

The Southeast Asian country is preparing for more heavy rains. The Interior Ministry has issued a warning for 32 provinces, including the capital Bangkok (centre) and the tourist island of Phuket (south).

According to the Interior Ministry, more than 62,000 houses have been damaged across Thailand so far during the rainy season.

In 2011, more than 800 people died in the country’s worst monsoon floods in decades.

The monsoon season (May-October) brings heavy rainfall every year, but scientists warn of the risk of worsening bad weather linked to climate change.
