A massive alligator is to be euthanized after biting a man on the arm while washing his hands in a murky pond.

The 25-year-old man was attacked around 11 a.m. Thursday in Sanibel, Fla., with the predator biting his right arm Thursday.

Sanibel Fire Department officials said he was able to extricate himself and called 911, with witnesses making a tourniquet for him before medics arrived.

He was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries to his right forearm and his current condition is unknown.

Authorities confirmed the man was from Arkansas and washed his hands in the pond before the attack.

Around 2 p.m., first responders were able to retrieve the alligator from the pond, with Florida’s Fish and Wildlife managing to capture the animal.

Officials captured three alligators, but the largest was the one that carried out the attack – and was a whopping 10 feet long.

Sanibel Fires Division Chief Tim Barrett said: “He’s a big guy, he said his arm hurt quite a bit.

‘But he’s a pretty tough old boy. He’s lost a lot of blood, but he’s fine.

“A pretty good size alligator… an alligator about 8 to 10 feet tall came up and grabbed his arm. It was a bit of a struggle.

“Sometimes they’ll use a big hook and a big piece of meat and throw it out there and catch him.”

Alligators are common in Florida and Chief Barrett said they respond to these types of calls more often than expected.

He now warns locals and visitors to be careful, adding, “Pretty much every body of water has an alligator, including some swimming pools.”
