By now we all know how much this Spider-Man: No Way Home is both a pretty good movie and one that basically got the entire multiverse going to the movies and seeing it. Some have seen it once, others probably two or three times if they have had the time and money to allow for multiple replays. But for a certain fan, seeing Tom Holland swing nets with Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire a few times wasn’t enough.
The Guinness Book of World Records has reported that Florida’s Ramiro Alanis has seen No Way Home in theaters 292 times. From December 16th to March 15th, the total running time is 720 hours, or basically a whole month. Ramiro isn’t sure how much he spent on tickets in total, but he estimates it’s around $3,400. For three months, before the cinemas stopped showing it, he watched it back-to-back, which is almost 12.5 hours of film. At this point, he said he could recite the film’s dialogue with the film…which he did aloud during his last screening in an empty theater. At least not a bad party trick.
Also, according to Guinness rules, he had to watch the film from start to finish; no sleep or bathroom breaks (11 of his watches were disqualified for said breaks), no checking his phone, and he had to last through the credits, which he was already used to. He then had to hold onto his ticket stub and was given a statement by a theater employee that he had seen the film. Balancing all of this with his family and career as a personal trainer hasn’t been easy, and he admitted that late-night screenings in particular were the hardest due to headaches after watching the film four times earlier in the day.
For Alanis, the goal was to reclaim his title as the go-to audience for most theatrical productions of the same film; He first acquired it in 2019 after watching Avengers: Endgame 191 times. (The previous record holder belonged to Joanne Connor in Australia, who watched Bohemian Rhapsody 108 times in early 2019.) However, in 2021 his record was broken by a certain Arnaud Klein, who watched the French comedy-fantasy film Kaamelott: The First Rate 204 times in the cinema. After his grandmother Jauny died in 2019 before he could earn his Guinness title, he wanted to break the record in her honor. “She was my No. 1 fan,” he told Guinness, “and I want to remain the record holder.” Now that he’s got his title, he’s determined to hold on to it, warning anyone who tried to try to lose his crown to pick: “If anyone tries to break my record again, I want them to think twice before trying.”
