Carolina’s medical facility is already full, but the Hurricanes could see a highly anticipated return this week, that of forward Andrei Svechnikov.
The Russian has been sidelined since he seriously tore ligaments in his right knee last March. His 2022–2023 season ended immediately, preventing him from helping his team in the playoffs.

The 23-year-old underwent anterior cruciate ligament surgery in July. Many expected Svechnikov to be ready in time for training camp, but on Monday he finally took part in his first contact training in seven months.
“Especially with this type of injury you shouldn’t rush [un retour], he said in a press interview, according to the website nhl.com. That’s why I’m trying to get back to 100%. Two weeks ago I had a 20% difference between my knees. Now it’s much closer to 100%.”
Head coach Rod Brind’Amour confirmed that the author of 55 points in 64 games last season will not play against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night. Svechnikov could play Thursday against the Seattle Kraken or the next day against the San Jose Sharks.
“We’ve gotten to the point where he needs more training sessions. “I assume it will happen soon,” said the former Canes captain.
“It will take a long time for him to get used to the speed of the game, but having him in our group is a big advantage,” Brind’Amour continued.
Sebastian Aho could return for the Hurricanes on Tuesday, but his case and that of goaltender Frederik Andersen and defenseman Brett Pesce will need to be reassessed before the game.
