Automaker Ford said Tuesday it intends to cut 3,800 jobs in Europe over the next three years to adopt a “leaner” structure as it focuses on electric vehicle production.
The company plans to cut 2,300 production development and administration jobs in Germany, 1,300 in the UK and 200 jobs in other European countries. It said it will retain around 3,400 engineering jobs in Europe focused on vehicle design and development and the creation of linked services.
The overhaul will not affect Ford’s goal of offering an all-electric fleet by 2035. The company expects production of its first European-built electric car to begin later this year.
“These are difficult decisions that are not to be taken lightly. We are aware of the uncertainty they are creating for our team and I assure them that we will offer them our full support over the coming months,” said Martin Sander, general manager of Ford Model e Europe.
“Putting Ford on the path to a sustainable, profitable future in Europe will require broad-based action and change in the way we design, build and sell Ford vehicles. This will impact the organizational structure, talent and skills that we will need in the future.”
