BUDAPEST, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) — Hungarian lawmakers today elected Tamas Sulyok, chairman of the Constitutional Court, as the country's new president.
Of the 199 MPs, 146 took part in the vote and cast 134 yes votes, five no votes and seven zero votes.
The majority of opposition parliamentarians did not take part in the vote. The opposition parties were unable to agree on a common candidate for the race.
“As a lawyer and in my role as President of the Republic, my main task is to serve the public well, embody the unity of the nation and uphold the fundamental values of the law,” Sulyok said during the nomination last Thursday.
Sulyok's predecessor, Katalin Novak, resigned on February 10 following the uproar surrounding the pardon scandal in a child abuse case.
Sulyok was elected for a five-year term and can be re-elected for another term in accordance with the Basic Law. The inauguration ceremony will take place on March 5th. End
