Inner Sydney, Australia, is poised to become the first place in the world to meet the UN goal of ending HIV transmission.

New HIV infections among gay men in innercity Sydney fell by 88% between 2010 and 2022, according to a study presented at the International AIDS Society HIV Science Conference.

In 2022, only 11 new HIV cases were recorded in the district, a significant decrease from the 100 cases recorded in 2010.

The decline in HIV infections in Sydney is attributed to universal testing and early treatment of HIVinfected people with PreP (HIV preexposure prophylaxis). This shows that it is possible to end HIV transmission in vulnerable populations, even in countries with high infection rates.

According to the Viva Bem column on the UOL website, positive numbers are also being recorded in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The country, previously among the places with a high infection rate, reported this week a 95% drop in this incidence, registering only 9 new cases of HIV infection in 2022.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), eliminating HIV transmission is not yet a reality. However, the WHO has a goal of eradicating AIDS by 2030.
