Former LSU basketball player Danielle Ballard has died aged 29 after being hit by a car.

The incident happened around 1:30 a.m. Thursday, Memphis police said.

Officials responding to a pedestrian who was hit on Coleman Road and Raleigh-Lagrange Road reported the ex-player was taken to hospital.

According to WREG-TV, Ballard was taken to Regional One Health but was later pronounced dead.

A police statement said: “The driver remained at the scene of the crime… The investigation is ongoing.”

Ballard, 5’7, started for LSU for three years after arriving as a four-star recruit from Central High School in Memphis.

During the 2014–15 season, she earned two SEC All Defensive Team honors as well as one All SEC First Team honor.

With the Tigers, Ballard averaged 12.1 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.8 assists over three seasons from 2012-15.

The guard played a key role in getting LSU into the Sweet 16 of the 2014 NCAA tournament.
