His family made the announcement in an Instagram post, explaining that “Ronnie passed away quietly and peacefully today in the company of his family and close friends.”
In August he was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of kidney cancer, which specifically affects the red blood cells, which become rigid and sticky.
His condition has worsened in recent days as he was hospitalized with pneumonia.
The family said on the footballer’s Instagram account that more details of his death will be released soon but ask for time before sharing more.
Hillman played five seasons in the NFL between 2012 and 2016 as a running back for the Denver Broncos, Minnesota Vikings and San Diego Chargers.
