Former police officer Derek Chauvin, convicted of the murder of George Floyd in the United States, was stabbed to death in prison this Friday (24). The information was reported by the Associated Press (AP), citing a source familiar with the matter. His health condition is serious.
According to the AP, the former police officer was stabbed to death by another inmate at a federal prison in Arizona. The prison has recently been criticized for security deficiencies and staffing shortages.
The federal agency that manages prisons said officials contained the incident and took “lifesaving measures.” Chauvin was taken to the hospital. No further details were disclosed.
Visits to the prison where the incident occurred have been suspended. The FBI was also informed about the case. As of the publication of this report, the former police officer’s lawyers had not commented.
Last week, the United States Supreme Court rejected an appeal of Chauvin’s murder conviction. At the same time, his defense is trying to prove that new evidence suggests he did not cause Floyd’s death.
The former police officer was recorded pressing his knee against Floyd’s neck on a street outside a supermarket. Three other police officers who were at the scene also received lesser sentences.

George Floyd died in May 2020 after Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin’s knee was pressed on his neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds.
Police were on scene because the 46yearold black former security guard allegedly tried to pay a grocery store bill with a counterfeit $20 bill. Images showed that Floyd did not resist the officers’ actions.
Police violence against a poor black man just one case among many sparked a series of protests in Minneapolis that soon spread to various parts of the United States.
The issue was on the agenda of the 2020 presidential election. ThenDemocratic Party candidate Joe Biden chose Senator Kamala Harris, a Black woman and former prosecutor, as his running mate for vice president.
