Former UFC heavyweight champion Kane Velazquez has been charged with attempted murder in California after a fatal shooting in San Jose.

Velázquez was detained without bail until his first court hearing on Wednesday.

San Jose police announced the shooting near the intersection of Monterey Highway and Bailey Avenue on Monday night before revealing Velazquez’s arrest on Twitter today.

“Cain Velazquez was the suspect arrested yesterday in connection with the incident,” San Jose police said in a tweet. “He was sentenced in Santa Clara County Jail for attempted murder.”

“The motive and circumstances surrounding this incident are still being investigated.”

A man was rushed to a local hospital with a non-life-threatening injury after being shot “at least once,” police said.

Velazquez, 39, is a two-time UFC heavyweight champion, winning the title in 2010 before losing it in 2011 and regaining it from 2012 to 2015.

He retired in 2019 after a 26-second defeat by current heavyweight champion Francis Nganu on February 17, 2019. Since then, he has fought in the WWE and Mexico, but has focused mainly on training other fighters in his long-running gym. San Jose.

According to numerous reports, Velázquez is a married father of two.

Born in Salinas, California and raised in Yuma, Arizona, Velazquez was a star wrestler in high school and won a couple of state championships. He would later win the NJCAA national title while fighting at Central Community College in Iowa. He eventually moved to Arizona, where he set a record of 86-17 for the Sun Devils.

He was at ASU in Tempe, where he first worked with future UFC fighters such as Ryan Bader and CB Dollaway.

From there, Velázquez began studying jiu-jitsu and later switched to MMA in 2006.
