The former US Secretary of State died at the age of 100 at his home in the US state of Connecticut. Kissinger was considered one of the most influential diplomats of the 20th century. As Secretary of State under Presidents Nixon and Ford, he had great influence on world politics, but was also very controversial. In the 1970s, he pushed for an easing of relations with the Soviet Union. He also began a cautious approach to communist-ruled China. In 1973, Kissinger received the Nobel Peace Prize along with the North Vietnamese chief negotiator for a ceasefire agreement in the Vietnam War. The war continued despite the agreement. After his political career, he remained an influential advisor and wrote several books. Last July, Kissinger traveled to China and met with President Xi Jinping there.

Controversial world climate summit begins in Dubai
The Cop Twenty Ait global climate conference kicked off in Dubai on Thursday. The fact that the head of an oil company assumed the presidency of the summit caused early criticism. In addition, a fierce dispute over the financing of the proposals is expected again. The focus is on the first global agreement on a phase-out of the use of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas, which are considered responsible for the increase in the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide and therefore the global warming. Disaster relief for poor countries is also discussed. Delegates from 200 countries already had a proposal on Thursday to create a fund to deal with the consequences of climate disasters, such as floods or droughts. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres calls for solutions.
