Pierre Dégarie, a resident of La Tuque, appeared at the Joliette courthouse on Friday. He faces multiple charges including attempted murder with a firearm, burglary and trespassing, and possession of incendiary material for the purpose of committing a crime.
Remember that the day before shots were fired to disturb the calm of Autray’s climb in Lanoraie. Several calls have been made to the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) regarding the detonations near Route 138 in Lanaudière.
One of the calls came from the suspect himself and led to his arrest.
According to our information, Dégarie went to his ex-wife’s house with a sawed-off long gun, cans of petrol and matches. He reportedly shot her spouse three times, hitting her in the back, leg and arm.
However, the victim managed to escape to seek help. He was taken to a hospital, but his life is not in danger.
He wants to take a shortcut
During his appearance, Dégarie wanted to represent himself without a lawyer and announced that he wanted to plead guilty.
“You want to plead guilty to attempted murder without a lawyer, without seeing the evidence? […] A guilty plea of this importance has significant legal ramifications,” said Judge Bruno Leclerc.
“I have no intention of finding loopholes to reduce them [ma sentence]. I am aware of what I have done. In the worst case, [ma sentence] must not be older than 25,” emphasized the 57-year-old, who had previously been in trouble with the law.
The magistrate postponed the file until next week. The Crown deemed him too dangerous to be released on bail and refused to release the accused for the remainder of the trial. Dégarie will therefore remain imprisoned until his next appearance before the tribunal.
