Bassist and singer Laura Lynch, who founded the musical group Dixie Chicks, now known as The Chicks, died in a traffic accident at the age of 65.
According to reports from TMZ, Ms. Lynch's car was allegedly hit by a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction on the highway and attempting to overtake another car. The driver died on the spot.
Laura Lynch was part of the country and bluegrass group from its founding in 1989 to 1995, initially as bassist and ultimately as vocalist.
She was replaced by Natalie Maines, who made headlines most notably by criticizing George W. Bush's administration on the eve of the American invasion of Iraq in March 2003.
The group responded to Ms Lynch's death on Instagram.
“We are shocked and saddened by the death of Laura Lynch,” the group wrote. She has a special place in our hearts for the time we spent playing music, laughing and traveling with her. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
She is survived by her husband Mac Tull and their daughter.
