The four doctors were “involved in the illegal removal of a kidney from a patient who had been given a different diagnosis to justify the procedure,” spokesman for the Guatemalan prosecutor’s office Moises Ortiz told reporters.

The victim filed a complaint in May 2022. Two of the doctors were arrested in the capital and two others in the surrounding area, he said. They are due to appear before a judge on Friday who will serve them with their charges, the prosecutor’s spokesman added.

The organ harvesting took place in the capital, but “at this stage of the process” no further details could be given, he stressed.

The investigation included searches, seizures of evidence and the gathering of testimonies establishing the alleged responsibility of the four doctors.
