Fox News pundit and Washington Post columnist Marc Thiessen railed against Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy’s foreign policy proposals, calling them “criminal stupid” and “utterly disqualifying.”
Thiessen responded on social media Monday to an article Ramaswamy wrote for The American Conservative about how he would approach the war between Russia and Ukraine and US-China relations.
“@VivekGRamaswamy’s is criminally stupid,” Thiessen said wrote in a post on Xformerly known as Twitter before quoting one of the lines from Ramaswamy’s article.
“Like a foreign policy essay for freshmen. Totally disqualifying,” Thiessen continued.
Thiessen chose to quote Ramaswamy’s article, which discussed the White House candidate’s pledge to accept Russian control of the occupied territories and to block Ukraine’s NATO candidacy “in exchange for Russia renouncing its military alliance with… leaving China”. Ramaswamy also said he would end sanctions to bring Russia back into the world market, thereby “highlighting Russia as a strategic constraint on China’s plans in East Asia.”
In his post, Ramaswamy signaled that he would significantly reduce US international involvement, writing, “We will no longer be uncle suckers.” Ramaswamy claimed that the US “missed,” its only chance, after the end of the Cold War to remain the world superpower by allowing Russia and China to work together to threaten the country’s supremacy.
Ramaswamy said he also plans to visit Moscow as President in 2025 to negotiate terms to end the war between Russia and Ukraine. Ramaswamy’s stance on the Russia-Ukraine war drew criticism from his Republican rivals during last week’s Republican primary debate, when he was the only candidate to raise his hand as moderators asked who would not continue to support Ukraine. Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley responded to Ramaswamy’s stance, arguing that he “has no foreign policy and it shows.”
In a post later On Monday, Thiessen responded to a post by Ramaswamy on his stance on Taiwan, writing: “Amateur lesson. All China hears is, “We can invade in 2028.” This is how world wars begin.”
Ramaswamy elaborated on Taiwan in his op-ed for The American Conservative, saying he will urge “strategic clarity” in defending American interests in Taiwan, in contrast to the current US policy of strategic ambiguity.
China regards Taiwan, a self-governing democracy, as part of its sovereign territory and seeks reunification with the island.
