When it comes to the registration of Ukrainian refugees, there is also a big gap between narrative and action.
Vienna (OTS) – ÖVP Chancellor Nehammer is currently traveling in Germany. According to his interview with the newspaper “Die Welt”, one of Nehammer’s objectives reported in the media is to seek German support against a permanent mutualization of debts in the EU. FPÖ President of the Federal Party President of the Club NAbg. Herbert Kickl: “Once again, this is the chancellor’s attempt to rack up points in Austria as a courageous fighter against the debt union. Unfortunately, the attitude of Nehammer and his ÖVP is different in the Austrian Parliament. Only in the last plenary session did the ÖVP reject a motion by the FPÖ ‘No to further expansion of the debt union’.”
The importance of vehement action against a new EU debt fund is also demonstrated by the fact that the Corona reconstruction fund will already be a burden on EU member state budgets by 2058. Kickl: “Once again it is evident that the Chancellor is trying to play down the population’s justified concerns with his verbal statements, but his political decisions and actions show otherwise. This approach does not stand up to a fact check.”
Nehammer’s other statements in the newspaper interview also reveal a certain credulity. For example, when the chancellor talks about the fact that all of Europe is starting to completely reorient itself in terms of energy supply, and that Putin has miscalculated why this European line will hurt Russia in 10 or 15 years. “Meanwhile, Putin has probably already found other oil and gas buyers in India and China. And Austria? Not good, because Nehammer, Gewessler & Co returned empty-handed from the big staged trip to the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. Only vague statements of intent were made regarding future energy supplies. But that doesn’t help Austria much,” said Kickl.
The ÖVP Chancellor acted dishonestly on the refugee issue: In the “Die Welt” interview, he emphasized the importance of registering refugees from Ukraine to “know who is coming to us”. Here, too, narrative and reality diverge, emphasized Herbert Kickl: “A comprehensive registry of Ukrainian refugees is criminally neglected in Austria. Therefore, it is not surprising that the numbers of people currently coming from Ukraine are based on estimates – simply because there is no comprehensive control. Traffickers have already changed their business model – according to German media, they obtain fake Ukrainian identity cards and advertise the route across the Ukrainian-Polish border for illegal immigrants. And once these people are in Austria, they can apply for asylum later. So what we liberals were the only ones to warn is happening, namely that the floodgates are open to abuse.”
