The United States and France mobilized this Tuesday at the United Nations to try to stop the offensive Azerbaijan in Nagorno-Karabakh after that country’s military operation against the Armenian enclave triggered a diplomatic maelstrom.
France called for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council to deal with the crisis, which comes just as world leaders gather in New York for the annual general assembly.

This operation was “illegal, unjustified and unacceptable,” French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna told the press. Azerbaijan This Tuesday they launched an offensive in the mountainous region of Nagorno-Karabakh, which has been in dispute with Armenia for years.

Blinken urged Azerbaijan “Immediately stop military actions in Nagorno-Karabakh and de-escalate the situation,” said his department spokesman Matthew Miller in his conversation with President Ilham Aliyev.
At least 29 people were killed in the offensive, which came three years after an earlier war Azerbaijan large areas restored.
Two diplomats said the Security Council meeting requested by France could take place in the coming days, possibly on Thursday.

Russia, for its part, called for an immediate cessation of “hostilities” and “bloodshed” in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, a secessionist enclave in Azerbaijan Armenian majority.
“In view of the intense escalation of the armed confrontation in Nagorno-Karabakh, we call on the warring parties to immediately stop the bloodshed, cease hostilities and avoid civilian casualties,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
