France wants to increase defense budget by a third

Against the background of the war in Ukraine, France wants to increase its defense budget by about a third. Around 400 billion euros are planned for 2024 to 2030, French President Emmanuel Macron announced today at the Mont-de-Marsan military airfield, where he presented the main lines of the law on the planning of military expenses.

The budget for the military secret service will also be increased by 60%. “Efforts match risks, both are significant,” Macron said. “Having restored the armed forces, we must transform them,” said the president.

The bill is scheduled to be debated in Parliament in March. The previous budget from 2019 to 2025 included €295 billion. However, the war in Ukraine revealed shortcomings in the equipment of the French armed forces.
