Georg Gänswein was at Joseph Ratzinger’s side for almost three decades. The German priest, who is now in the eye of the storm in the Catholic Church, met Cardinal Ratzinger, then prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, in 1995 for a casual chat at the German College in Rome, where Gänswein had already lived two years since moving he went to the Vatican to work in the Roman Curia the world government of the Catholic Church.
The following year, Gänswein joined Ratzinger’s team in the Doctrine of the Faith, where he distinguished himself among the staff of the heavy institution responsible for the observance of Catholic creeds, the heir to the former Inquisition. In 2003 Ratzinger invited him to become his private secretary, a post he would hold until December 31, 2022, the day when Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. died in the shadows in the Vatican after nearly a decade.
