Airport officials found a body in the landing gear of a Lufthansa jet that had arrived from Iran on Thursday morning, sources said.

Frankfurt Airport officials found the body of a man in the landing gear of a Lufthansa jet that had arrived from Tehran during a routine maintenance check at 5:30 a.m. local time, police told CNN.

Bild, which first reported the news, said workers found a mask and an oxygen tank next to the body, according to police information.

“We can confirm that a body was discovered in the aircraft’s landing gear bay during a routine inspection of a Lufthansa Airbus A340-300 after landing in Frankfurt yesterday,” a Lufthansa spokesman told CNN.

“The responsible authorities are currently on site to clarify the background together with experts from the company. We ask for your understanding that we cannot provide any further information against the background of the ongoing investigations.”

Deutsche Welle informed the German Press Agency DPA that a flight from Tehran to Frankfurt scheduled for Friday has been cancelled. Lufthansa flight schedule information suggests that he and another flight were canceled on Saturday, but service is expected to resume on Sunday.

The discovery follows weeks of protests in Iran following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody after being arrested for not wearing her hijab properly, according to BBC News.

That said Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock Thursday that Berlin would begin imposing entry restrictions on Iranian nationals in response to the escalating struggle between state and citizens over human rights.

Lufthansa did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.
