Fraud on the Île-d’Orléans: the police ask the population for help

Thanks to their ruse, people posing as peace officers were able to recover the bank cards and PINs of some victims in L’Île-d’Orléans last June.

The incident dates back to June 29 in the Saint-Jean area, when a woman contacted people to tell them that they had been victims of a scam, but the suspects had already been arrested.

“We then ask them for personal information and then put their bank cards in envelopes in front of the house under the pretext that two investigators will come and pick them up,” explains the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) in a press release.

One of these “fake representatives” was caught on surveillance cameras.

The SQ is asking the public for help in identification. He is a man about 1.85 m tall and weighs about 80 kg.

He has brown hair, is believed to be in his 40s and was wearing a black hat and glasses at the time of the incident. The suspect also has a star tattoo on his right elbow and left calf.

According to provincial police, the people who took part in this plan may have caused casualties elsewhere in Quebec.
