Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman added another strong player to his roster on Sunday, signing forward Christian Fischer on a one-year deal that will earn $1.125 million in the 2023-24 season.
Fischer had 13 goals and 14 assists in 80 games for the Arizona Coyotes last season.
Fischer’s signing comes on top of the many acquisitions made at the opening of Saturday’s free agent market. The Wings kingpin has signed two experienced defenders in Justin Holl and Shayne Gostisbehere who will stabilize the defensive roster.
With his offensive talent, Gostisbehere will be able to provide the Red Wings with valuable services on the power play. In 2022–2023, he accumulated 41 points, including 13 goals, in 75 games.
As for Holl, his defensive versatility will be very useful for his future team, especially in penalty shootouts. Last year he finished second with 139 blocked shots for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
With Moritz Seider and Ben Chiarot, the team already has two top defenders.
An explosive attack
The Michigan team already has a well-equipped offense and have added two offensive elements that give it depth.
It’s JT Compher and Daniel Sprong. The two players had the best season of their careers, amassing 52 and 46 points respectively last season. These two skaters can also be used in all sauces.
Last year, Yzerman was busy on day one of the free agent market. In addition to Chiarot, he signed strikers Andrew Copp and David Perron.
Despite those signings, Detroit missed the playoffs for the seventh straight year. Derek Lalonde’s men finished the campaign with a 35-37-10 record and finished seventh and penultimate in the Atlantic Division.
