French coast guard rescues 201 migrants in distress at sea

The French Coast Guard is in the English Channel near Calais 201 boat migrants rescued from difficulties at sea. On the way to Britain, several overcrowded boats ran into difficulties over the weekend, the maritime prefecture said on Monday. During an operation, some migrants managed to restart the engine of their damaged boat. They refused to board the rescue ship and headed towards Britain.

The coast is under reinforced surveillance

Since 2018, France has taken measures against migration, unwanted by the British government, with the support of London. In March, Britain pledged more than half a billion euros to France over the next three years to increase coastal surveillance.

As the “Politico” portal said on Monday, citing information from Paris Ministry of the Interior reported that from January 2018 to August 2023, French police managed to stop 3,400 boats carrying more than 81,000 migrants before crossing into Britain.

During the same period, 3,500 boats carrying more than 111,000 migrants managed to cross. However, the actual number of people moving to Britain may be higher because not all boats and migrants are noticed by authorities when they reach British shores.
