Thousands of Twitter users reported being unable to use the social media app on Saturday, prompting hashtags like “TwitterDown” and “RateLimitExceeded.”

The outage began around 8 a.m. EST on Saturday morning and continued throughout the afternoon, according to DownDetector. As of 1 p.m., there have been over 7,000 downtime reports regarding the website.

Some users reported issues, including not being able to fetch tweets or getting the error message “Sorry, your plan is limited. Please wait a moment and then try again.”

Elon Musk, who acquired the San Francisco-based platform in 2022, tweeted around 1 p.m. about post-reading restrictions “to counter the extreme levels of data scraping and system manipulation,” saying the following restrictions were applied temporarily: Verified Accounts are limited to reading 6000 posts per day, for unverified accounts up to 600 posts per day and for new unverified accounts up to 300 per day.

Others tweeted Musk directly, saying things like, “Hey Elon, my twitter isn’t working” and “A restriction on reading tweets?”

Twitter users faced widespread service disruptions in March, one of the biggest outages since Musk took power. More than 8,000 users reported disruptions.
