Frontex – the European Border and Coast Guard Agency – plans to deploy 50 border guards and other personnel and equipment, including patrol cars, to strengthen Finland’s border control activities. This major reinforcement is expected to be operational as early as next week and demonstrates Frontex’s commitment to rapid response and effective support to “hybrid challenges”. Finland has closed almost all border crossings with Russia and accuses Moscow of encouraging the arrival of migrants.
“Frontex’s support to Finland goes beyond logistics. It is proof of the European Union’s united stance towards hybrid challenges affecting one of its members: This cooperation shows that Europe is united in tackling complex border problems and offers support through concrete measures,” said Frontex Managing Director Hans Leijtens. Frontex plans to deploy the first group of officials on Wednesday, November 29, to expand the joint operation Frontex Terra 2023 in Finland. This includes border surveillance officers, migrant registration support, document experts and interpreters. Frontex currently has 10 agents working at the Finnish borders.
