Radio 1’s Big Weekend opens the festival season in the UK by bringing some of the biggest British and international artists to cities that might not otherwise host such big events, shining a light on the region and giving a big boost to the local economy.

Radio 1’s big weekend was originally due to go to Dundee in 2020 but was unable to take place due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

This year the BBC is working closely with Dundee City Council to host Radio 1’s Big Weekend 2023.

Lewis Capaldi said of the news: “I’m really excited to be playing the Big Weekend in Dundee, I never managed to get tickets last time so I’m really excited to come along and enjoy and play. ‘

The 1975 added: “We look forward to seeing everyone in Dundee for our first outdoor show of the year!”

Wet Leg said: “It feels like it was only yesterday that we almost got wet from fear before playing the Future Sounds stage, or maybe it was raining? Anyway we will be in Dundee for the big weekend this year but apparently on the main stage this time. See you in Scotland boys.’

Niall Horan similarly said: “Can’t wait to open the festival season at Radio 1’s Big Weekend 2023 in Dundee. See you all there!’

Zara Larsson added: “I am delighted to be back at Radio 1’s big weekend. I’ve been touring and perfecting my show and can’t wait to see you guys out there!’

John Alexander, Chairman of Dundee City Council, says: “This is an incredible opportunity for Dundee and we look forward to hosting such an exciting event at Camperdown Park in 2020 following the disappointment of cancellation.

“Radio 1’s big weekend will not only showcase Dundee to the tens of thousands of visitors, but also to the millions who will be watching and listening via the BBC. We expect a huge economic boost for the region as the event has been worth millions of pounds for previous venues.’

BBC Radio 1 will be broadcasting live from the festival site throughout the weekend, with performances and tracks available live and on demand via Radio 1’s iPlayer channel and BBC Sounds.
