G20 India, sources: Agreement reached on statement on Ukraine

The G20 Sherpas agreed on the text of the declaration on the war in Ukraine, overcoming remaining differences between Russia and the rest of the group after China put aside its opposition to avoid being isolated. Informed sources told Adnkronos, reminding that the text must be approved by the leaders. The language used would be similar to that used to condemn Russian aggression at the G20 summit in Bali last year.

As G20 diplomatic sources told Adnkronos, the wording on which the agreement was reached is “somewhat weakened compared to the Bali text” from last year. The agreement was reached “laboriously” after a night of negotiations on the basis of a compromise drawn up and proposed by Indonesia, India, Brazil and South Africa, which in the end also had to be accepted by the eliminated Russia alone in order to resist.
