G7 Foreign Ministers in Tokyo

Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has landed in Tokyo, where he will attend the meeting of G7 foreign ministers scheduled today and tomorrow, where the deputy prime minister will take up the baton of the G7 presidency for 2024.
The focus of the meeting was the situation in the Middle East, in Ukraine, but also on other dossiers such as the Indo-Pacific. On the sidelines of the ministerial meeting, Tajani will hold bilateral meetings with colleagues from the group countries and meet representatives of Italian companies currently in Tokyo to take part in the XXXIII. General meeting of the Italy-Japan Business Group (Ijbg).
“Israel is a country at war, but I believe that we must continue to work on stability and de-escalation and that is why the ultimate goal is that of two peoples and two states. Obviously there will have to be a transition period “for Gaza.” There could be, for example, a presence like that of Unifil in Lebanon, from that point of view an agreement could be found, we have talked about it and we will continue to talk about it.
The goal is peace.” As the G7, “we all agree to help the Palestinian people.” Hamas is something different, it is a terrorist organization that must be fought and Israel is right to attack it. Obviously, the Palestinian population, who have nothing to do with Hamas and who use Hamas as human shields, need to be kept out.” “It certainly takes time, but we want to make sure that the Palestinian people get out of this war and of course out of Hamas .” must be outside Palestine.
We firmly believe in the PNA, which can be an interlocutor for the future, as it is today.” “Military pauses to allow the civilian population to leave the conflict areas” is one of the hypotheses that “seems reasonable to us.”
As for assistance, Tajani explained: “Since Italy is ready to set up a field hospital, Minister Crosetto is considering it with the Chief of Defense Staff.”
We have sent relief supplies and are ready to treat the wounded in our hospitals, of course not terrorists.”

“Italy has once again become the protagonist of international politics” and “here in Tokyo we are taking the baton from Japan: from January 1st, it will be Italy’s turn to lead the Western countries, the G7. We will do this with great determination.” We deal with the big issues: from the Middle East, the war in Ukraine, stability, the southern front, the Mediterranean to working together for peace and the defense of democracy against dictatorships and autocracies. This is the work we have to do and I believe that Italy will do it very well.”
