Gala of the 38th Gémeaux Awards: “Indefensible” is the daily newspaper of the year

Untenable was named Best Daily Drama Series at the 38th Gémeaux Awards Gala on Sunday night.

TVA’s court newspaper, which had the most citations this year with 14, beat its competitor STAT from ICI Télé, the only other production to appear in this brand new category.

“We are experiencing turbulent moments on television, we are celebrating tonight, but I have the impression that we are the orchestra on the Titanic. We need to listen to our television, we need to watch our television, we need to talk about it, we need to broadcast it, we need to subscribe, we need to watch it because it would be really boring to find ourselves in such a place where La petite maison dans la prairie played at 8 p.m. in the evening. Our television is cross-genre, diverse and varied, it has finally entered the modern age and we are not tempted to give in, long live Quebec TV!” said Charles Lafortune, executive producer of Pixcom, while accepting the award for “Indefensible”.

Shortly before, the showrunner had made the effort to greet STAT producer Fabienne Larouche, knowing the effort involved in producing a daily newspaper.

STAT, on the other hand, shined thanks to two of its stars: Suzanne Clément and Geneviève Schmidt, respectively, winning the Gémeaux for Best Leading Role and Best Supporting Role: Daytime Drama Series, two categories that, like all the others, are now of no gender. For her part, the author of the medical daily, Marie-Andrée Labbé, received the Gémeaux for the best text and the director Danièle Méthot received the prize for the best production in this segment.

The other most nominated production, The Night Laurier Gaudreault Awoke (12 nominations), won three awards, namely the Gémeaux for Best Actor: Drama Series (Patrick Hivon), best, at the awards ceremony directed by Pierre-Yves Lord on Sunday evening Supporting Role: Drama Series (Anne Dorval) and Best Director: Drama Series (Xavier Dolan).

“In the first episode of Laurier Gaudreault you aged me 20 years, you let me die, but in the same episode you brought me back to life, Xavier. […] I thank you for everything you give me in life,” said Anne Dorval in a funny speech to the one who has guided her so often.

The latter had already won the editing prize at the Industry Gala last Thursday, which he shared with Stéphane Lafleur. The series, available on Club illico and currently airing on Télé-Québec, has won a total of six trophies.

The title of best drama series, in which the competition was particularly strong, went to Avant le crash, the title of best annual series went to the detective series Alertes – which also received the award for best text for Julie Hivon – and Completely High The School received most votes in the Best Comedy or Dramatic Comedy category.

Christine Beaulieu and Catherine Trudeau decorated

As for the cast, Catherine Trudeau accepted the Gémeaux for Best Leading Role: Annual Drama Series for Perfect Moments, a series that will premiere next December. For her part, Christine Beaulieu won the Gémeaux for best leading role in a comedy or dramatic comedy for “The Eye of the Storm.”

Among the authors, Simon Boulerice was celebrated for his Chouchou texts.

Among the special prizes, the Academy’s main prize went to two series that were as strong as they were moving: Mégantic and Pour toi Flora.

A good gala, a good host

Pierre-Yves Lord, dapper in his mustard, black and purple suits, hosted a unifying TV party celebrating all the channels and their key shows in the opening number, including Masquerade Singers, Live from the Universe, La Voix, Y’ a du monde à messe and Zénith. It was full of energy, but like any gala, it was too long.

Note the passage of Benjamin Graton with his mother Patricia Paquin and Antoine Parent-Bédard with his mother-in-law Cathleen Rouleau during the presentation of the prize awarded to Suzanne Clément. It was funny – when Benjamin, who we see in STAT, told Patricia in Rooms in the City that he was better than her – and touching at the same time.
