Game of Thrones author George RR Martin gives update on spin-offs – Fox Business

Game of Thrones writer George RR Martin will have a busy 2023. In a recent blog post, Martin let fans know what he’s up to over the holidays and shared an update on the Game of Thrones spinoffs and where they stand amid the Warner Bros. and Discovery merger.

Martin explained he took some time off for the holidays but is now “back at the salt mines… working on so many friggin’ things,” including the next book in the Game of Thrones series, Wind of Winter, as well other projects with HBO Max.

“Some of these move faster than others, as is always the case with development. So far, none have been given the green light, although we hope…maybe soon,” wrote Martin.

Although he admitted that some of the projects have been shelved for the time being, he hasn’t lost hope that one day these projects will be seen by audiences.

“A few have been shelved, but I wouldn’t agree that they’re dead,” he said. “You can take something off the shelf just as easily as you put it on the shelf.”

Martin added, “Of course, all of the changes at HBO Max have had an impact on us.”

One of the spin-offs, House of the Dragon, was released in early 2022 and was an instant hit. The show, based on Martin’s book Fire and Blood, follows the Targaryen family dynasty and is set nearly 200 years before the Game of Thrones storyline.

Martin congratulated the show’s cast on their Golden Globe nominations for Best Drama and thanked Emma D’Arcy for an individual nomination for Best Television Actress in a Drama Series for her portrayal of Rhaenyra Targaryen.

The pilot for another prequel series starring Naomi Watts was filmed but canceled because producers didn’t think the show would have worked. However, on the same day the cancellation was announced, it was revealed that another spin-off – House of the Dragon – would be heading towards fans.

Another spin-off, Snow, is in the works. It will focus on the life of fan-favorite character Jon Snow after he was banished up north at the end of the original series.

“Yes, there is a Jon Snow show in development,” Martin wrote on his blog in June 2022. “Yes, it was Kit Harington who gave us the idea. I can’t give you the names of the writers/showrunners, since that hasn’t been cleared for publication yet… but Kit brought them too, his own team, and they’re great.

Not much is known about the plot of the new show’s first season, but fans are hoping it means some of their favorite characters will return.
