Garrone on the Eurocentric shortlist at the Oscars

(ANSA) – NEW YORK, DECEMBER 22 – With the Homeric drama about two Senegalese cousins who flee to Europe between deserts, internment camps in Libya and the dangers of the Mediterranean, Matteo Garrone has broken through a shortlist with a very Eurocentric touch: I Capitano, Italy's official nominee for the Oscars, is one of nine European films among the 15 on the list, of which the final five will be selected on January 23rd to compete for the statuette on March 10th. Three other films were nominated from Asian countries, two from Africa and one from Latin America.

“Garrone’s journey continues,” applauded Rai Cinema’s Paolo Del Brocco, who co-produced the film, but the competition is fierce. They are up against two potential front-runners such as “The Zone of Interest” by Jonathan Glazer, British nominee and winner of the Special Jury Grand Prix in Cannes, and the Spanish film “The Snow Society” by JA Bayona: the Netflix film that that closed the Venice Film Festival could emulate “Nothing New on the Western Front,” which won four Oscars this year.

The academy has also announced shortlists in some technical categories. If the Italians support Garrone, then there is Italy in the short film “Wings of Dust” by the 24-year-old Giorgio Ghiotto. And a touch of Italy in the makeup selection too, thanks to Elisabetta Arlotti and the very Italian team that took care of Adam Driver's look in the Ferrari.

Greta Gerwig's Barbie took first place with five mentions, three of them in the Best Original Song category: Billie Eilish and Finneas for “What Was I Made For,” Dua Lipa for “Dance The Night,” and Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt for ” I’m Just.” Ken, the latter also got involved in the sound selection. Gerwig's film, a summer phenomenon, however, disappointed in terms of make-up, which rewarded two very controversial “prosthetic noses” the evening before: that of Helen Mirren in the role of Golda Meir in “Golda” and that of Bradley Cooper, the Lenny Bernstein from Maestro.
