Gas: EU saves 19.3%, Italy just below average ANSA news agency

(ANSA) – ROME, 26 FEBRUARY – Italy has managed to save nearly 20% of its gas consumption, putting it in good company in Europe. In fact, natural gas consumption in the European Union fell by 19.3% in the period August 2022-January 2023 compared to the average gas consumption in the same months (August-January) between 2017-2022. Union member countries, including Italy, managed to reach the 15% reduction target set in the EU Coordinated Gas Regulation for the period August 2022 to March 2023 compared to the average for the same period of the previous five consecutive years Measures to reduce demand, part of the REPowerEU plan to end Europe’s dependence on Russian fossil fuels. This emerges from the energy data published by Eurostat and transmitted by the national statistical offices of the Member States.

Between August 2022 and January 2023, among EU countries, Ireland (-0.3%) recorded the smallest decrease in natural gas consumption over the reference period, while Spain (-13.7%) and Slovenia (-14.2%) recorded significant decreases have not yet reached the 15% target. In other members of the Union, the savings exceeded the target by 15% and in some particularly significantly (over 40%). Consumption fell the most in Finland (-57.3%), Lithuania (-47.9%) and Sweden (-40.2%). With a drop in consumption of around 19%, Italy is just below the European average. (HAND).
