Var Energi, a public company whose majority shareholder is Eni, has announced a new gas discovery in the Barents Sea, Norway. The discovery is tentatively estimated at 9 to 21 billion cubic meters of recoverable gas (57 to 132 million barrels of oil equivalent) and has the potential to contribute to future gas supplies from the Barents Sea. THE
Hole 7122/9-1 T2 (Lupa) is the first exploration hole drilled under License PL229E. It is located 85km northwest of Hammerfest and approximately 27km northeast of the Goliath Field operated by Var Energi. It was drilled with the Transocean Enablers drilling platform to a water depth of 403 m. The well encountered a 55 meter long column of gas in the sandstones of the Triassic Havert Formation. An extensive data collection and sampling program was undertaken.
Var Energi holds a 50 percent interest in the PL229E license together with partner AkerBP (50 percent). Var Energi, owned by Eni with an approximately 63 percent stake, is one of the most important independent upstream oil and gas companies on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS). It has a strong and diversified portfolio of assets with ongoing development projects and a strong track record in exploration. Var Energi has interests in 36 fields that produced 246,000 boe per day net production in 2021.
