Put a cap on gasoline retailers profit margins

Gasoline tax: relief needed for drivers

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CCF) is calling on the Quebec government to reduce the provincial gasoline tax to protect the wallets of Quebecers who use their cars every day to get their children to school and work.

“A provincial gas tax cut would allow many Quebecers struggling to make ends meet to save hundreds of dollars,” FCC Quebec director Nicolas Gagnon said in a news release.

Mr Gagnon believes Prime Minister François Legault should “take inspiration from his counterparts by giving families a petrol break”.

In particular, he recalls that the Government of Manitoba recently announced the suspension of the provincial tax of 14 cents per liter of gasoline for six months. “This measure will allow the average household to save $250 this year,” Mr. Gagnon said.

The same is true in Ontario, where the government cut its provincial gasoline tax by 6.4 cents per liter from summer 2022 to June 30, 2024.

“The numerous taxes and gasoline prices are obstacles that place a heavy burden on the wallets of Quebec families,” argued Mr. Gagnon.
