The four young people who caused a ruckus in Gatineau on Friday night over a possible kidnapping are now facing criminal charges as everything indicates it was a “very tasteless” joke on a friend.

“People don’t realize the impact making a joke like that can have on a community. It disturbs the peace. “There are people who genuinely believe that a person was kidnapped,” Patrick Kenney, public relations officer for the City of Gatineau Police Department, told the Journal.
Three young men and a young woman, aged 16, 17, 18 and 19, tried to scare their friend by accosting him on the street, then putting him in the trunk of a vehicle and fleeing on Friday evening.
After receiving tips from the public on Saturday morning, the pranksters and the victim were eventually contacted by authorities.

Police intervention would not have been necessary. The group arrived safely at an SPVG post.
Until then, these young Gatineau residents were unknown to authorities. However, investigators will continue their analysis of this case.
And because of this “reckless behavior,” the suspects risk being brought to trial for unnecessarily initiating investigations, the SPVG points out.
A violation of the road traffic regulations could also be reported because the vehicle drove onto the road with a person in the trunk.

Gatineau police had also asked for the public’s help in finding a person who may have been abducted while walking south on Gauthier Street.
“The case was treated as real. We have deployed many resources to ensure the safety of the alleged victim,” argued Patrick Kenney of the SPVG.
A search was underway for a red four-door Nissan Altima or Sentra and detailed descriptions of the suspects were released.
