INTERNATIONAL – Israeli hostage Elma Avraham, 84, who was kidnapped by the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas on October 7 and released on Sunday, was hospitalized in intensive care and her life was threatened, the hospital director said.

Elma Avraham “is in critical condition. She is being treated in our emergency room because there has been a significant lack of care during her detention by Hamas in recent weeks,” Shlomi Codish, director of Soroka Hospital in Beersheba, told reporters.

“Her life is in danger and she is being transferred to the intensive care unit where we hope to stabilize and improve her condition,” he added.

Kidnapped from her home on Kibbutz Nahal Oz

The old lady, an artist, was kidnapped late on the morning of October 7 when Hamas militants broke into her home on Kibbutz Nahal Oz during the Palestinian movement’s bloody assault on Israeli territory.

The Israeli military estimates that 240 hostages were taken to the Gaza Strip that day.

According to her son Uri Rawitz, with whom she spoke that morning, the octogenarian had failed to lock the door to the safe room in her house. Uri then receives a photo showing his mother and another hostage being taken away on a motorcycle by armed fighters.

Elma Avraham is part of a group of 17 hostages, including 14 Israelis, who were released on Sunday after seven weeks of captivity, on the third day of the ceasefire in the war between Hamas and Israel, in return for the release of 39 Palestinian prisoners.

This is the third time in three days that Israeli and foreign hostages have been released. This is part of the ceasefire that has been in force since Friday and is due to end on Monday evening.
