GENEVA, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) — Around 25,000 Palestinians have reportedly been killed since Oct. 7 last year during the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, most of them women and children, a United Nations official said today. United.

Ajith Sunghay, an official with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, said in a video conference from Gaza that the situation there represents “an enormous humanitarian crisis.”

In Rafah, the official said that since January 15, he had seen thousands of people arriving from various places in desperate situations and setting up improvised shelters with the materials they could find.

“The disruption in communications has been ongoing since January 12, adding to fear and confusion. Bombs are falling in the middle of Gaza and Khan Younis can be heard in Rafah,” he said.

Speaking from Amman today, Tess Ingram of the United Nations Children's Fund told a news conference that nearly 135,000 children under the age of two were at serious risk of malnutrition. In the north of the Gaza Strip the situation is even worse, he said.

Ingram said that during the week she spent in Gaza, she saw women losing their newborns and other babies with severe injuries and illnesses.

Due to difficult conditions and limited access, it is currently difficult to determine the exact number of child deaths, Ingram said. However, he stressed that there was no doubt that babies die from hunger, disease, cold and bombings, nor was there access to appropriate help.
