This network was used by the organization's top officials, Ismail Haniyeh, Yahya Sinwar, Mohammed Deif and others

IDF troops secured the Rimal district, Hamas's “elite neighborhood” in central Gaza City, including the area of ”Palestine Square” from which Hamas's administrative and military leadership operated. The complex included a vast network of tunnels connecting terrorist hideouts, offices and residential apartments of the terrorist organization's top leadership. Both above and below ground, this complex was a center of power for Hamas' military and political wing.

“Palestine Square” was surrounded by buildings that served as the organization’s command and control centers, terror tunnel shafts, and strategic buildings. This military infrastructure was in close proximity to commercial stores, government buildings, civilian residences, and a school for deaf children.

The tunnel entrances to the network were located in the homes and offices of high-ranking officials and allowed secret descent via special elevators and stairwells. This underground network, which included numerous hideouts and blast doors, allowed Hamas members to escape and remain in hiding for long periods of time. Food, water and electricity infrastructure were found in some tunnels, allowing longer stays. This network was used by the organization's senior figures, Ismail Haniyeh, Yahya Sinwar, Mohammed Deif and others, to direct Hamas's operational activities. It was also used for protected daily travel in the heart of Gaza City.

Near these buildings, Hamas had set up a special workshop for the excavation and construction of the underground network. A tunnel shaft used for logistics and tunneling equipment was discovered in the workshop, including concrete walls and arches that make up the tunnel ceilings. Next to it is a 20 meter deep shaft with spiral stairs that lead underground.

The battle to secure the area lasted several weeks and was led by the 401st Brigade of the 162nd Division as well as forces from the Shaldag Unit, Shayetet 13 and the Yahalom Unit. The Israel Defense Forces conducted a joint and coordinated all-unit offensive to secure the area. During the fighting, around 600 terrorists were eliminated in ground and air strikes.
