Passport in hand and hope of escape. Nothing to do, salvation disappeared when humanitarian aid arrived, the gates of Rafah crossing remained closed to the thousands of Palestinians with dual nationality who arrived via the only possible exit Gaza Strip. Among them, dozens of Italians, including six hundred Americans, were confident that negotiations between the United States, Egypt, Israel and Hamas would be successful. They remained crowded together yet invisible at the border all day, sitting on suitcases and trolleys, the children disoriented and tired, exhausted from the useless waiting. First there was euphoria, hope, then silence among the groups of families, older people and disabled people. They stared at the bars of the passenger exit terminal all day, showed their passports to journalists in vain and continued to call their respective American, Canadian and European embassies to ask: “Why won’t they let us through?” Like Nadia Baraka, a Palestinian and German citizen interviewed by Euronews who reported: “My daughters have agreed with the German Foreign Ministry that I can go, but I can’t.” We arrived and found everything closed. At least help us go. I just want to go. And Ibrahim Al-Qarinawi, with a Swiss passport: “I came to Gaza for two months to visit my family, at exactly the wrong time. The war began and we were under siege. This war is very cruel. There is no water, no electricity, no telephone or internet, nothing but death and destruction.” Raghda Abu Shaaban, with a Palestinian and American passport, hoped for this: “After seeing the situation in Gaza, the destroyed houses and the people living under Dying in the rubble, I say that Allah has given me a new life because I managed to get here.” I want to leave and return to America, but I will leave my heart here. Nothing is more valuable than a human being.” It was almost done, the Egyptian territory was only a few meters away, but no one cared about them. “Maybe someone will come and let us out.” Then they gave up. The Rafah border crossing remains closed: no one can leave Gaza for Egypt. The humanitarian corridor does not concern them yet, the nightmare is not over for anyone.

INSIGHTS

THE PASSAGE
Just 20 trucks, not a single one left, crossed the gates of the Rafah crossing at 9 a.m. yesterday to bring medicine and medical supplies, as well as a “limited” amount of canned food, water and mattresses to exhausted civilians stuck in tent cities in the Gaza Strip and the remnants of Gaza.

The gate was immediately closed. And no fuel was allowed to enter. Humanitarian aid entering the Gaza Strip was transferred from 20 Egyptian double-container trucks to 30 trucks already on the Palestinian side of the border crossing. The operation took place in a large clearing. But outside there remained endless columns of trucks along the border of desperation, inside there were 3,000 tons of humanitarian aid and 930 tons of food. “The fuel will not reach Gaza,” Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman Daniel Hagari told the Times of Israel. From Rafah, Hagari said, food, water and medical supplies would flow to the southern part of the Gaza Strip. Lack of supplies: According to the World Food Program, the first aid convoy contains 60 tons of food, including cans of tuna, flour, pasta and beans. However, “immediate, safe and permanent access for aid to Gaza” must be guaranteed. A first step, but the Gaza Strip needs much larger quantities of medical supplies and food, considering that around 500 trucks were already arriving daily before the Hamas attack.

After two weeks of war and death, as well as diplomatic meetings and mediations, including visits by United States President Joe Biden and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, Israel allowed the 20 trucks to enter. According to all humanitarian organizations on the ground, this is an insufficient concession. The Red Crescent commented: “We regret that the tankers were not allowed. The aid coming into Gaza from the Rafah crossing is a drop in the ocean of humanitarian needs.” Hamas communications office chief Salama Maruf said: said the same: “This limited convoy will not be able to change the humanitarian catastrophe that the Gaza Strip is experiencing,” and stressed the need to “establish a safe corridor that operates 24 hours a day.” to meet humanitarian needs and essential services that are no longer available and to allow the wounded to leave the country for treatment.”

The Palestinian Red Crescent, in coordination with UNRWA (the UN refugee agency), has set up two large warehouses in the south of the Gaza Strip – in Rafah and Deir el Ballah – to ensure the distribution of aid. United Nations Secretary Antonio Guterres appealed “for a humanitarian ceasefire” and insisted on “immediate, full humanitarian assistance” to the civilian population in Gaza and on the “immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.” The more than two million residents, half of whom have fled their homes, are rationing food and drinking undrinkable water, with children most at risk. There is a dramatic lack of medical supplies and fuel for emergency generators in hospitals. Time is running out.
